06 The install

Verify the install

Four independent checks that the whole stack is running: the folder tree on disk, the plugin count in the log, the in-game window, and the diagnostics the mod reports about your own machine.

Do not skip this. A mod that is almost installed behaves exactly like a mod that is not installed, and working that out later — three chapters into a playthrough, after something has gone wrong — is far more painful than spending two minutes on it now.

On diskCheck one: the folder tree

This is what a complete, correct install looks like. Compare it against your own game folder.

the game folderA finished install. Eleven items: three folders, the game executable, and the five loose files BepInEx adds — .doorstop_version, changelog.txt, doorstop_config.ini and winhttp.dll sitting directly beside Bendy and the Ink Machine.exe. That adjacency is the whole trick; one folder deeper and none of it loads.

the BepInEx folderSix items. cache, core and patchers you never touch. config holds the settings files, plugins holds the mods, and LogOutput.log is rewritten on every launch — here it is 41 KB, which is a healthy run rather than an early crash.

BepInEx.cfg is the loader's own settings; the 88 KB stixsworldhd.bendy.ungodlyenhanced.cfg is every one of the 222 settings written out in plain text with its description, type, default and valid range.

In LogOutput.logCheck two: the log

Open <game folder>\BepInEx\LogOutput.log in Notepad. You are looking for three things.

1. BepInEx started

Near the top
[Message: BepInEx] BepInEx 5.4.23.5 - Bendy and the Ink Machine
[Info : BepInEx] Running under Unity v2022.3.x
[Message: BepInEx] Preloader started
[Message: BepInEx] Preloader finished

2. Both plugins were found and loaded

The chainloader
[Message: Chainloader] Chainloader ready
[Info : Chainloader] 2 plugins to load
[Info : Chainloader] Loading [Ungodly Bendy Enhanced 1.2.0]
[Info : Chainloader] Loading [Ungodly Bendy Community Patch 1.1.3]

The number in N plugins to load is the fastest single check on this whole page.

Log saysMeaning
2 plugins to loadCorrect. Both DLLs found.
1 plugins to loadOnly one DLL is in plugins\. Check which.
0 plugins to loadBepInEx is running but the folder is empty or the DLLs are elsewhere.
No Chainloader line at allBepInEx did not start. Nothing after this matters until that is fixed.

LiveCheck three: in the game

Launch the game, get to the main menu, and press F7. The settings window opens over the top.

General tab of the Ungodly Bendy Enhanced settings windowView full size · 1920×1080
GeneralThe window open at the main menu. The tab list runs down the left, the live status panel sits beneath it, and the settings pane on the right carries a plain-English explanation under every entry.

Read the status panel

Bottom-left of the window. It is reporting what the mod has actually found on your machine, in this scene, right now — which makes it the most useful diagnostic in the whole mod.

LineWhat it meansWhat you want to see
ResolutionThe resolution the game is running at this instant.Your actual resolution
AspectThe calculated aspect ratio label for it.A sensible ratio — 16:9, 21:9, 16:10
UI scaleThe final scale factor being applied to the interface.x1.000 at 1080p; about x2.000 at 4K
CanvasesHow many UI canvases the mod found and took control of.At least 1
ProfilesPost-processing profiles found in this scene.0 at the main menu is normal — check again in a chapter
CamerasCameras found. Bendy uses a world camera and a weapon camera.2 in gameplay

vanilla (no player in scene)You are in a menu. There is no player to compensate, so nothing has been changed yet. This is correct at the main menu.Start a chapter and look again
144 Hz (compensated) or similarWorking. The physics rate was raised to match your display and the gravity compensation was applied successfully.Nothing — this is the goal
compensation unavailableThe game has been patched and the fields the compensation needs could not be found. The mod is correctly refusing to change the physics rate, because broken jump heights are worse than a little jitter.Nothing you can do. Everything else still works.

DiagnosticsCheck four: the About tab

The last tab in the list carries a Diagnostics panel that goes further than the sidebar. This is the single most useful screen in the mod, and the one to screenshot if you ever need to report a problem.

About tab of the Ungodly Bendy Enhanced settings windowView full size · 1920×1080
AboutThe About tab at the main menu. The Diagnostics panel in the lower half reports what the mod actually found on this machine, in this scene — not what it hoped to find.

Reading the Diagnostics panel

LineShown hereWhat it tells you
Post-processingno post-processing profiles foundCorrect at the main menu. The menu scene has no profiles. Check again inside a chapter, where it should report two.
Cameras2 camera(s): Weapon, UIWhich cameras were found and identified. In gameplay you also get the world camera.
Managed canvases1How many UI canvases the scaler has taken control of. Anything above 0 means the UI fix is live.
Volumetric renderers0Zero at the menu is normal. In a chapter this should be 1.
Brightness effectavailableThe vanilla brightness clamp was located and can be bypassed.
Menu aspect patchinstalledThe one to check. The Harmony patch on AspectRatioUtil applied — this is the ultrawide fix.
SupersamplingoffOff unless you turned it on. If it says it failed, the log explains why.
Smoothnessvanilla (no player in scene)Correct at the menu. In a chapter this becomes your refresh rate plus a compensation state.
Detected resolutions26How many display modes were merged from the seven sources. A plausible number for a single 1080p panel.

Two buttons sit under the panel:

  • Rescan everything now — forces an immediate sweep for cameras, profiles and canvases rather than waiting for the timer. Useful if you have just loaded into a chapter and want the numbers to update at once.
  • Re-enable supersampling — clears the failure latch if SSAA switched itself off. It disables itself deliberately when the camera stack cannot accept a presenter without disturbing draw order, or when the GPU refuses the buffer size; the log says which.

DoneIf all four checks pass

The install is complete and you can stop reading. Everything after this page is optional: a reference for the settings, some starting points for your hardware, and a troubleshooting page for if something goes wrong later.
